Master Pot, located on the second floor of Dragon City Mall at 280 Spadina Avenue, Toronto, offers a genuine taste of Cantonese cuisine with a focus on the traditional dish known as Bao Zai Fan, or clay pot rice. This distinctive dish is prepared by slow-cooking rice along with a variety of meats, vegetables, and savory sauces within a clay pot. The method results in rich flavors and a signature crispy layer of rice at the bottom, making clay pot rice a comforting and satisfying meal. In addition to clay pot rice, Master Pot serves authentic rice rolls, or Cheung Fun, which are steamed rice noodle sheets rolled with fillings such as shrimp, beef, or vegetables, a staple in Chinese street food and dim sum culture.

The interior of Master Pot provides a casual and inviting atmosphere, ideal for diners seeking to explore a taste of traditional Cantonese comfort food. This setting is well-suited for those who enjoy a comforting, communal dining experience and is perfect for casual meals with family and friends. Surrounded by Toronto's vibrant Chinatown, visitors can enjoy the rich culinary heritage that Master Pot draws from.

Amazing clay pot rice!! It’s authentic, sizzling hot, the flavor is just right. The rice goes so well with the meat and veggie, and the price is decent too. I love how there is crunchy 锅巴 (rice crust) at the bottom of the pot. You get a free drink/soup for dining in. 5% off for paying in cash. The portion is somewhat large.

Classic claypot rice prepared in a unique way! Remember you get a discount for both eating in (Soup or drink provided for free) and paying in cash (5%) discount. When I arrived, I was the only person in the facility. The food was excellent and well-prepared. Expect it to take longer as claypot rice requires that as part of the cooking and method. The service is good and I would recommend it for a low and slow meal - it is hearty and best celebrated in small groups. In short, if you are looking for good claypot rice prepared in this style, Master Pot does it well. They may not have a ton of options, but that allows them to properly deliver exactly what they want to. I will say that there are public washrooms nearby but none within Master Pot.

Wow I really like the clay pot rice !! The crispy rice at the bottom is the best part and so good. The salt fish is so tasty. The portion is just right and priced reasonable. Definitely going back. Reminder only cash and debit card. As it is freshly cooked so need 20 mins at least wait time, worth the wait. Appetizer is just OK a bit dry for my order.

If you’re craving traditional Cantonese claypot rice in Toronto, this spot tucked inside one of Chinatown’s older malls is worth knowing about. They focus almost exclusively on Chinese claypot rice, which already sets the tone — this is about comfort, tradition, and doing one thing properly rather than chasing trends. As someone who was born in Toronto with parents from Hong Kong, claypot rice is deeply nostalgic for me, and this meal instantly brought back memories of family dinners and cold winter nights. I ordered the classic claypot rice with Chinese sausage, preserved meats, and pork patty, and added a salted egg. The flavours are exactly what you’d expect from a proper Cantonese claypot — savoury, warming, and deeply comforting. The rice absorbs all the juices from the meats as it cooks, creating layers of flavour throughout the pot. Each dine-in claypot rice comes with a drink, which is a really nice touch. I ordered a hot Ovaltine, which felt especially nostalgic and perfect on a cold Toronto day. Be prepared to wait — claypot rice is not fast food. Mine took about 25 minutes, but that’s part of the experience and honestly non-negotiable if you want it done right. I also asked for the rice to be cooked a little longer, which paid off later. The first bite is all about balance: steamy rice, savoury meats, the saltiness of the egg, sweet savoury soy sauce, and a generous kick of chili oil, all coming together in one mouthful. Speaking of chili oil — it’s essential for Cantonese food in my opinion, and it really elevates the dish. The highlight, though, is the crispy rice along the sides and bottom of the claypot. Crunchy but still moist, smoky, and soaked with flavour — this is why people love claypot rice and why patience matters. Is this the best claypot rice in Toronto - no. But it’s solid, satisfying, and comforting. Portions are generous, prices are very reasonable, and on a freezing Toronto winter day, this kind of meal really hits. If you’re looking for authentic Cantonese comfort food in Chinatown, especially claypot rice done the traditional way, this place is well worth a visit. Rating: 7/10
