Hana Don Japanese Cuisine & Bar

Visited on June 4th and ordered two sashimi dons. I asked to replace the white tuna in my bowl with salmon, and they charged me an extra $4 for just 2 pieces. The total bill was about $95. While the food was tasty, it’s definitely overpriced for what you get. The atmosphere was also way too loud. It might be okay for tourists looking for a spot, but if you’re a toronto local, I’d highly recommend going to other sushi restaurants instead. Not worth the hype for locals.
A small unassuming restaurant. When you’re inside there’s a small dining room. It’s clean and the atmosphere is relatively quiet. We ordered the Sous Vide beef don, the sea food chazuke, and the okonomiyaki (not pictured). Both dons were very flavourful, and had fresh ingredients. The okonomiyaki was good in flavour as well and enough to share between two people. Portion sizes are good for when you’re hungry, but not super hungry. The dishes are rice heavy, but the quality of rice is top notch and cooked perfectly to match with the dishes. The bowls are definitely rice heavy. It’s good if you’re hungry, but not super hungry. The portions are good sized, but for what you are paying for it is on the pricier side. I think it is justified given the freshness of the ingredients, and that it’s in downtown right on Dundas. We definitely are going to go back to try the other dons. Service was great. Our waters were constantly topped up, and our server was very attentive - even asking for allergies (since a lot of servers dont seem to do this anymore). I will caveat this by saying there were only 6 people in the restaurant though. If you’re in the area and craving something fresh, then I would recommend this place for sure. We definitely will be back to try the other dons.
I think it was average! I would not go again but I wasn’t upset with what I got! If you’ve been wanting to go, I would (to kill you curiosity) but would not recommend :) I would like to note that the sashimi slices within the bowl were thinner than expected. I think the rice and fish ratio were off too. They also push the citrus flavour in a lot of these dishes. I prefer my fish without this acidic element but if you like it, I would recommend trying it out!
We had a pleasant dinner at Hana Don, I got the Premium Bara Don, and the food was good although I was expecting a bit more either in terms of quality or quantity. Most of my table enjoyed their meal, except the beef bowl (could be personal taste). They called to let us know dining was limited to 1 hour despite a reservation (no mention of limit during booking) and a similar reminder upon entry made us feel a bit rushed. Overall, service was efficient and friendly and food was decent.
We walked in on a whim hungry for anything Japanese (hoping for sushi), asked for a table for two, oh man we were spoiled here. The service was amazing, I don’t know if they are always like this but the servers went above and beyond waiting on us - we felt so pampered. Okay now the sushi, it was perfection. We ordered the SO2 luxe box and SO5 salmon lover. We’d go back for just the phoenix roll. Thank you for the memorable yummy dinner!
