Can’t believe this place is still standing since my clubbing days. The place is so much more brighter. Tables along the walls are closely packed but the larger tables in the middle are spacious. Service is quick. Food is average not bad. Prices reasonable.

If you want a quiet, polite dining room with aesthetic lighting and meticulous presentation, do not come here. But if you want intense, high-heat wok execution, zero pretense & food that hits the table at boiling temperatures at 1 AM, Swatow is the definitive standard on Spadina. It has outlasted dozens of trendy spots in Chinatown for a reason: consistency and speed. The environment is tight, brightly lit & highly transactional. The tables are close together, the acoustic level is constantly high & the floor staff operate with absolute velocity. They do not have time for casual conversation & they shouldn't - they are running a high-volume nocturnal kitchen that feeds half the downtown core after hours. You sit down, you order by number, the hot tea is dropped instantly & the food arrives within single-digit minutes. The execution of their Wok Hei (the breath of the wok) is flawless. You can taste the intense, high-temperature heat signature in their beef fried rice noodles. The noodles have that perfect slight char on the edges without being greasy & the beef remains incredibly tender. Another mandatory order is the deep-fried squid with spicy salt and pepper - the batter is exceptionally light, perfectly crisp & heavily seasoned with garlic, scallions & chili slices that cut straight through the richness. If you are fighting a winter cold or looking for pure comfort, their wonton noodle soup or beef brisket soup is unmatched. The broth is deep, complex & clear & the shrimp wontons are plump and tightly packed. It is raw, fast, highly efficient & consistently accurate. It is open late, it accepts cash & it delivers maximum flavor profile with zero corporate polish. A foundational pillar of Toronto’s late-night food culture.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Swatow Restaurant is truly one of the best Chinese restaurants I have ever visited. From the moment you walk in, you can feel the history and authenticity of this place. With more than 50 years of serving customers, they have clearly perfected their recipes and maintained an incredible standard of quality over the years. The food is absolutely outstanding. One of my favorite dishes is the soup made with beef tendon and organ meats, which is rich, flavorful, and prepared with great care. Their stewed beef dishes are also amazing, tender, and full of authentic taste. In addition, they offer an incredible variety of fried rice, noodle dishes, and many traditional Chinese specialties. No matter what you order, you can tell that the ingredients are fresh and the cooking is done by experienced chefs who take pride in their work. What I appreciate most is that this restaurant is perfect for families and groups of friends. The portions are generous, the atmosphere is welcoming, and there is something on the menu for everyone. It is the kind of place where you can create great memories while enjoying delicious food together. I highly recommend Swatow Restaurant to anyone looking for authentic Chinese cuisine. Whether you are trying it for the first time or have been coming for years, you will leave satisfied and looking forward to your next visit. A true Toronto gem that deserves every one of its five stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I honestly didn’t expect the food to be THIS good. Every single dish was packed with flavor, fresh, hot, and incredibly satisfying. The first bite literally made me stop and look at my friend because it was that delicious. It’s been a long time since food made me this happy. Definitely one of the best Chinese restaurants I’ve tried lately, and I already know I’ll be coming back again and again!

We decided to give this restaurant a try after seeing all the rave reviews online and were excited to experience some standout dishes. I ordered one of their bestsellers, the Swatow Special Noodles, but it ended up being quite disappointing. The broth was bland and lacked the depth and richness I usually expect from Chinese noodle soups. I found myself adding a lot of soy sauce and chili just to make it more enjoyable. The beef was extremely chewy, and the toppings, mostly processed meatballs didn’t feel particularly special. The seafood fried noodles were decent, though they also lacked that same richness and depth of flavor. We also tried the beef tripe, which looked very appetizing, but the taste was fairly average and didn’t leave a lasting impression. Overall, the food presentation was great, but the experience was just okay. It didn’t live up to the hype for me. There are definitely other Chinese restaurants that offer better flavor and value for the price.
