An evening on the outdoor patio provided the comfortable setting for an unpretentious yet classic French dining experience. Beef Tartare — Beautifully prepared and expertly seasoned. The quality of the beef itself was exceptional lean, perfectly trimmed with no fat, and served at the ideal temperature rather than being unpleasantly chilled. I was also incredibly pleased to see it served without a raw egg yolk on top, a common addition at other restaurants that I personally prefer to avoid. The dressing was exceptionally flavourful, providing just the right balance to complement the beef without overpowering it. Cassoulet Royal — A rustic and hearty assembly of baked white beans, pork sausage, and pork belly. Given that this dish has been a staple on their menu for quite some time, I was particularly disappointed with how it turned out. Unfortunately, the duck confit fell short of expectations. Rather than offering the quintessential silky, fall-apart texture that yields effortlessly to a fork or gentle twist of the bone, it leaned slightly underdone. While traditional cassoulet preparations can vary, this version lacked the melting tenderness expected from a proper confit. Raspberry Soufflé — Although it was disappointing to learn that the Grand Marnier soufflé is reserved exclusively for colder months, the raspberry version arrived with a stunning, picture-perfect rise and a beautiful golden-toasted crust. The server suggested creating a well in the center to drop the accompanying sorbet inside, a common presentation technique. However, wanting to appreciate the soufflé entirely on its own merits, I opted to taste it clean first. This purist approach revealed a slight variation in the bake: while the top was beautifully set and the very bottom was lovely and fluffy, the layer immediately beneath the crust retained a bit too much moisture, creating a noticeably wet, not moist middle layer before reaching the airy sponge below. Go for the exceptional tartare, enjoy neighborhood patio atmosphere, and remember, "Le soufflé n’attend pas, c'est le soufflé qui attend les invités."
Really great food! I highly recommend this place. One of the best French bistros in the city that has classic French dishes but still modern and fresh. The croquettes and fish stew were highlights for us. Don’t forgot to order the soufleé!
Apologies for the late review - recovering from a long winter. This was on my Leslieville bucket-list: Having grown up in Leslieville, I'd often walk past Batifole on Broadview and wonder about it — though it was never quite the right fit for family dinners with my menu-shy parents. Fast forward to 2026, and I finally made it inside to celebrate my husband's birthday. A Toronto winter did its best to stop us (one flu bug, one snowstorm, two reschedules), but we made it. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was warm and inviting. Our server mentioned that her husband is one of the chefs — a true husband-and-wife operation, and it shows in the care of the place. We started with pan-seared scallops — delicious enough that I forgot to take a photo. My husband had the Cassoulet Royal (duck leg, pork, and pork belly) and loved every bite — high praise from a picky eater. I had the Ravioles du Dauphiné, a regional French specialty: tiny, delicate ravioli in a warm cheesy broth. Wonderful. Dessert was a toasted banana with a crème brûlée crust, and the kitchen even added a birthday candle — such a thoughtful touch. The music was soft, the conversation flowed easily, and the evening felt effortless. Would absolutely come back. Highly recommend.
Who knew my new favourite French spot in the city would end up being in East Chinatown? Batifole is a lowkey fun night out with its casually elegant vibe, welcoming atmosphere, and some outstanding food. - Cassolette d'Escargots: Escargot drowned in a creamy sauce. Unusual but it definitely worked. - Foie Gras: Cold and intensely creamy. The side bread was divine. - Duck Confit: Fall-off-the-bone tender yet also hearty at the same time. Heavy on the sauce and galette, which I liked. - Fish of the Day: Looked deceptively simple, almost like a kids dish. But the fish was almost souffle-like in texture with every bite. - Apple Tartetatin: Beautiful presentation, strong apple taste. - Souffle: Can see why this is a crowd pleaser with how light, airy and custard it was. I've fallen in love with this place and its take on French cuisine. Will definitely be back, especially as their menu changes seasonally.
Amazing food, such good quality and delicious. The flavours were spot on. We ordered the duck and hangar steak and both were cooked to perfection, every element worked. The drinks were also delicious, such a cute restaurant and the souffle was the perfect end to the night.
