If your concept of a solid night out requires a hyper-curated, minimalist cocktail lounge with custom brass lighting, low-intervention natural wines & an exclusive guest list, stay out of Chinatown. Go line up in Yorkville or King West and pay a premium to stare at your phone in a sterile glass box. Grossman’s Tavern, anchoring Spadina Avenue since 1943, is an unyielding, sticky-floored, beautifully unpolished monument to live blues, cheap draft & working-class creative survival. In a city where real estate speculation routinely sanitizes cultural institutions to build generic high-rises, Grossman's is a defiant, gloriously raw middle finger to corporate gentrification.
Finally got around to checking out this Toronto institution. It has a really chill, low-key atmosphere with zero pretension. The service was quick and attentive, and their whiskey selection is genuinely impressive. Definitely a spot I’d recommend for a quiet, laid-back night out.
I took my partner here for New Orleans party jazz on Sat afternoon to surprise him for his birthday. The energy was beautiful, the musicians were incredible, and we had the most amazing time. We were reminded of how free we felt on our road trip to New Orleans years ago. It was an unforgettable experience.
I’ll start with the atmosphere. It was such a cute tavern. It’s lively and also not chaotic, fun for most ages, including the older crowd. The food was good, the entire menu is under $10. definitely a good bang for your buck. My table ordered a grilled cheese sandwich, popcorn, a burger and fries, which were definitely homestyle cooked and reflected on the pricing! If you are paying less than 20 or $25 I would recommend bringing cash as they do not accept card for smaller purchases. When I went they had live music playing. It was great to see how versatile the band was and how it was filled with such a variety of ages. I actually got the pleasure of meeting one of the band members family, and it was so nice to engage with them. I loved how people got out of their seats and were dancing as well. Definitely a great place for a date night. There are no covers for the performances the police got lots of sunshine and a nice cool breeze. It didn’t feel like we were underground or in a dungee place. I would definitely recommend this establishment to others. It was such a pleasant experience! thank you for having us!
